Choose a repeatable format
Use a short structure: business progress, a small set of consistently defined metrics, cash and runway where appropriate, risks or setbacks, and specific requests. Label the period covered and distinguish actual results from forecasts. A repeatable format makes changes easier to understand and reduces the work of starting from a blank page every month.
Explain the difference between the plan and reality
If revenue, product delivery or hiring differs from the plan, explain the cause, cash impact and response. Do not hide a meaningful setback behind a long list of minor wins. State what is known, what remains uncertain and when you expect to know more. Keep supporting evidence available to the appropriate reviewers.
Respect the disclosure framework
An informal update does not replace required filings or contractually required information. Have the legal team determine when an event triggers a report, amended disclosure or other action. Use approved channels and consistent information. Avoid implying that a new financing, a conversion or an internal valuation is a realized return to investors.
Turn goodwill into specific help
Ask for a defined customer introduction, relevant hire or expertise, with enough context to make the request actionable. Close the loop when someone helps. Keep an archive with dates and review responsibility. The downloadable update template gives you a starting structure; adapt it to the company’s actual obligations.
